iOS 7. Change is good. I'm loving the new update. For the most part. It's a fresh new look with tons of hidden shortcuts. For a techie like me, I'm in heaven. I kind of like the fact that you need to dig deeper to find some really cool things. For those who don't know, I used to work for At&t. In worked in wireless sales for years. I love it all.
For this post, I'll be writing about some of the cool things about iOS 7 that I want to share with you all. There are many more tricks that I am leaving out for now. Whether you're a hardcore tech head, or just someone interested in knowing more about what your iPhone can do, this post will be very helpful.
Swipe from bottom to the top of your phone and this shortcut menu will appear.
Airplane mode, WiFi, Bluetooth, do not disturb & portrait orientation lock are all available to turn ON or OFF with one tap all in one place.
Control the brightness of the screen and the volume of your music too.
Flashlight (my fav), alarm, calculator and camera are also all there too for easy access.
2. Notification Menu
Here is where you can check the date, weather and calendar events. App notifications and missed calls/voicemails will be displayed here too.
3. Search feature
You probably noticed that when you swipe to the left, nothing happens. The search feature can now be accessed through any page on the home screen. Simply swipe from the top of the screen, to the bottom and you will see the search function appear.
4. iTunes music
Very similar to the pandora app. You have the ability to create your own station by music genre or artist. Give it a star and you'll hear more music similar to that song/artist. Love it? Click the top right and buy the song immediately.
5. Block someone
About time you can block someone right? Kinda nice to not have to go directly to the carrier for this to work. Go to contacts, scroll down and you will see "Block this user." Easy peasy. Made a mistake? Do the same thing and hit "Unblock." It will prevent the person from calling, texting and facetiming you.
6. iMessage Time Stamp
This feature makes me happy, not sure why. It bothered me that I couldn't always see the time I had a convo. So here it is. All you need to do is swipe from the right side of the screen to the left and the time will appear and then disappear. You will have to swipe every time when you want to see the time.
7. iMessage to iCalendar
It's the little things that make life just a little bit easier. You may have noticed some of your text have been underlined. Whenever you mention a day or time, you now have the ability to click that text and add it directly to iCal. All you have to add is a title and end time if necessary. Cool beans.
8. Auto App Updates
Thank you Apple Gods! It bothered me so much to see the little red numbers on the app store, waiting for me to update those apps. Not anymore! Now they will update on their own like good little apps :)
Go to Settings - iTunes & App Store then scroll down until you see Automatic Downloads. Make sure Updates are green and turned on.
9. Track Data by App
This is a really good trick to know. This will help you manage your data usage and prevent you from exceeding your allotment for the month. You can individually turn on/off apps that you are not using.
Go to settings, cellular and scroll down until you see the apps. Turn on/off whichever ones you want.
10. Facetime audio calls
If you are always running low on minutes every month, you're in luck. You can now face time with audio only. You can use this over WiFi or LTE. Keep in mind that if you aren't on WiFi, you are using your data allotment for the month.
There ya have it folks! The new iOS definitely takes some getting used to, so I hope this post is helpful to you. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below.
